Updates from the Walled Garden in Spring

What can be discovered in the Walled Garden at Markshall this Spring?

Our Walled Garden is home to a stunning variety of plants and flowers, making it a true sanctuary for gardeners, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful stroll through a delightful landscape. A highlight of the Walled Garden is that it is Essex’s longest herbaceous border, showcasing a beautiful mix of perennials, shrubs, and ornamental grasses.

This April, we want to share some updates from William, our Senior Horticulturalist. William and his team have been hard at work ensuring the Walled Garden is the perfect place to enjoy the early spring weather.

As spring arrives, daffodils burst into bloom, and by late spring, the garden is further transformed into a dazzling array of colour that is a sight to behold – come along and see the pretty blossom in the linear garden.

What else is thriving?

The tulips in the wavy hedge garden are now fully in bloom, offering vibrant splashes of colour across the landscape. Our herbaceous plants are also starting to emerge, which we look forward to seeing more of in the coming weeks. The iris collection is thriving, with fresh shoots popping up – each season brings so much joy with new and exciting changes in the Walled Garden, so pop along and see for yourself!

How else can the Walled Garden help us to reconnect with nature?

Beyond the impressive displays of flowers and plants you will find the newly added gravel garden in the linear garden, nestled under the canopy of the Amelanchier × lamarckii ‘Robin Hill’ trees.

We have now installed a new access ramp to improve access to the garden. The high brick walls shelter the garden from the elements, creating a peaceful retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Are you looking for inspiration?

If you have a keen interest in gardening, are looking to improve your own green space at home, or simply in search of natural beauty, visit the Walled Garden to be inspired. Markshall’s horticulture team are often on hand to share their expert advice, and visitors can learn about the many varieties of plants and flowers that thrive in this unique environment. The lawns have recently been aerated to reduce winter compaction and promote healthy growth as we transition into the warmer months.
